VOORHEES, NJ - Well, it's do or die time for our Flyboys tonight. I wanted to touch on a couple things and I'd love to hear your feedback on it. I have to say all year long the two things I've been frustrated with both deal with inconsistency. 1.) Inconsistency on defense. 2.) Inconsistency on offense. While the Flyers outshot the Penguins 46-26 in Game 4 I felt that while Marc-Andre Fleury was spectacular, the Flyers still didn't get many quality chances. It's frustrating because it seems like every other game this happens, and a lot of it falls on the shoulders of Jeff Carter. When Carter is going well and going to the net, the Flyers win. If the Flyboys are going to win tonight, we need him to step it up and put the puck in the net. I attended practice this past week and saw how hard Danny Carcillo was working so I was happy for him to finally put a puck in the net.
Now, as you know I've never been a huge fan of head coach John Stevens but the weeks leading up to the end of the season he really ticked me off. For example, the Florida game at the end of the year. Briere is playing on a line with Carter and has 2 pts that night and is a + on the night. Stevens feels like he should sub in Arron Asham on that line with less than 5 minutes left to try to generate a "spark." He makes these kinds of mistakes way too often and it's really starting to tick me off. He also hasn't addressed now in the 3rd season still getting outshout 75% of the games. I don't want to hear the argument that they aren't quality shots because A.) There are a lot more quality shots than coach wants to let on, and B.) It doesn't matter what kind of shots they are when you have a guy like Martin Biron in net. He's a good average goalie but he isn't Marty Brodeur, let's start playing better team defense and that goes for the forwards too. I have seen flashes of it from Carter and obviously Richards but the rest of the guys need to get with the program.
Keys to winning tonight:
1.) Score early - When you score early the team plays a lot better. Must score first to keep the hopes alive.
2.) Marty Marty Marty - Marty needs to play his best game of the series tonight folks, or else we're going home. If Marty lets in a softie early this team deflates, a la Roman Cechmanek era, especially against Pittsburgh. Not that they should, but in games like this you have to make the saves you are supposed to make.
3.) Big Guns step up NOW - Carter, Richards, Briere, Giroux, Gagne - The leaders of this team definitely have the talent to beat Pittsburgh and win the battles, this is their chance to step up and carry the team and show it tonight.
I'd love to hear your thoughts at flyer@hockeystreams.com, and hopefully my next report isn't an offseason report.
Good Night, Good Hockey.
