Andrei Markov Down for the Count
Okay, so that lasted all of what, 45 minutes?

Absolutely devastating news came out of Montreal early today, with RDS breaking the way announcing that Andrei Markov will be out of the game for [up to] four months including rehab.

In short, the only hockey he is going to be seeing is on TV until about after the Olympic games set in Vancouver in February.

Just a side note before continuing: Markov was the last Canadien from last season to steadily wear the A in the past.

Markov stayed in Toronto as the rest of the team left for Buffalo, undergoing surgery to repair a lacerated tendon in his left ankle.

How did this injury happen? Markov was cut by a skate, none other than Carey Price's skate, while he scrambled to get back into position before the Maple Leafs scored their third goal.

This is the second time Markov has been hurt in Toronto at the ACC. Last season, in the final game he was hit from behind into the boards by former Canadiens forward Mikhail Grabovski, blowing out his knee and forcing the defenseman to sit out the remainder of the season and playoffs.

To fill the void that Markov leaves, the Habs are going to rely on Roman Hamrlik, recently recovering from the flu, and TSN is reporting that Yannick Weber is expected to be called up from the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Weber was cut from camp and sent to the Bulldogs last week.

Finally, the worst statistic any Canadiens fan wants to hear right now (and dreadfully remembers from last season): 7-20. That's the Canadiens' record when Markov is missing from the lineup.

The best news a Canadiens fan could hear? This doesn't spell doomsday.

Jaroslav Spacek had some time last night quarterbacking the power play, which is good news with this injury.

Josh Gorges had his hands full last night, scoring the overtime winner with 12 seconds left to go in the OT. He also had a piece of Montreal's tying goal, getting the shot off while Glen Metropolit redirected it in.

With Weber and the above mentioned Hamrlik, the Habs will look to rely on Spacek, Hal Gill, Paul Mara, Gorges, and Ryan O'Byrne.

Defense looked to be a concern last night as Price was peppered with 43 shots. Something like another 25 were blocked by Canadiens defensemen.

How do you think the Markov injury will effect the Canadiens over the next ten games?

Looks like it's just you and me. Despite all the views, nobody likes to post in the Habs section.

Maybe it's optimism, but I think we'll be just fine. Our other defensemen have stepped it up since game one, and with Markov on the long term IR there's speculation that Gainey might be after a big name defenseman to get them into the playoffs.

It's only two games into the season, don't count us out yet.

    Hey, another Habs fan!

I think we may need more than Bergeron, we're in serious trouble right now.

We have no defense (or very little), no goalie (not a starting one anyway), and or offense is only coming in short spurts and then going AWOL the rest of the game.

It's going to be a very long season for Habs fans, and if we're lucky we can at least get a top draft pick next year out of this.

Not if we have a real goalie like Halak in net. Wait, what am I thinking? Gainey only likes playing untalented hacks.

yes markov will greatly be missed since he had the most moint on pp as defencemen last year (and mtl didn't have the best pp so imagine if they did) so our pp will be affected also since we lost streit and souray dont know wht gainey was thinking by not signing streit becuz the reason why i think tht mtl had great succes two years was due to their power play since they streit on one side markov on the other and then kovy on the wing so tht really makes a great power play and we didn't had any injuries and other reason for as for last year its totaly diff story ..... we all know wht happend

as for now we have team with lot of character and heart compare to the last team yes andrei k is still not playing to the potential he should but this team want to win and work hard to do it. metropolit, moen gionta, cammelri and mara were great signing

we will know how this season will go for everyone not just habs after 20 games and how the real standings for playoff begins after the all star game and if at tht time mtl is in solid postion and they continue to play solid they will make the playoff for sure.
